BEAR RIVER - PLACER FOOTBALL 2012 PREVIEW

On Friday night the undefeated Bear River football team will travel just 12 miles for what could be their biggest game of the season. While the Bruins sit at the top of the Pioneer Valley League so does their undefeated opponent which is Placer High School.

It is not often that a 6-0 team is called the underdog, but as I look at the stats for this contest, it is clear Bear River must play a near perfect game to keep the score close.

The Hillman will score a ton of points as they have done all season. The boys in green have averaged 52 points per game including two games where they have scored over 60. By far the best team Placer has played in its six games is Yuba City (5-1) who defeated powerhouse Inderkum in a 49-42 shootout.

The Bruins on the other hand have lined up against Highlands (4-3) who play out of the Sierra Delta League and went on to win a 29-28 contest.

Stats

Dillon Smith (BR) QB rating 106, 157 yards per game vs Pete Denham (PL) QB rating 122, 121 yards per game.

Running Backs (BR) 187 yards per game vs 355 (PL)

Points scored (BR) 188 vs 317 (PL)

Point allowed (BR) 108 vs 126 (PL)

The Bruins are coming off a big win this past weekend at Colfax so they are flying high. This is not the same Bear River offense which we have seen in years past. They are passing more.

If Bear River is going to win the contest they will need to stop the run on defense and pass the ball utilizing a shotgun set. Smith will not have much time to make down field reads nor will their running back be able to run the ball up the middle. They will need to attack the edges on offense.

If Placer is going to win the game on Friday they will need to defend against the quick pass and get after the quarter back. Smith is the leader of the Bruins and the more time he is given the better he does. The Bruins running game is a speed game and they will look to double and triple team Eddie Vanderdose as others have tried with limited success. On offense they will run the Wing-t and try to get  the Bruins to over commit and use the cut back to expose the Bruins speed.

This is a David vs Goliath game, the people I speak with say Placer is the front runner for a CIF Section Championship.
