NEVADA UNION FOOTBALL - COTA VS NOGOSEK PREVIEW

This weekend the Miners will face another prolific passer in Stephen Nogosek (my favorite baseball prospect in the Sacramento area). While the Woodcreek quarterback leads the SFL with 1,380 yards passing, he has had a hard time out scoring his opponents  As the Timber-wolves have given up more points than any other team in the league. They were blowout 54-14 by Placer who is a division III school. Yes the Hillman are a great team so maybe not a good comparable.

This is a must see game for fans of the passing game as this contest will showcase the SLF's top two quarterbacks including Kyle Cota (NU) who has thrown over 1,100 yards and Nogosek.

At the onset of the football season I stated, this Miner team could be one of the best. Well they have earned three wins as well as three losses. They have lost key players due to various reason, which are not easy to replace.

Nick Mafucci (5'11" at 200 lbs) outside linebacker and Jared Cook (6'2" at 195) defensive end are out due to injury while Cole Hannum (6'2" at 225) RB/LB and Owen Sparks (5'8" at 160) got caught up in a transfer rule issue with the CIF which made them ineligible to play their senior season, pending a final appeal ruling due in the coming week.

Not to take anything away from the boys who are healthy and eligible but the Miners have had problems defending the pass all season. If NU had these four top players I'm comfortable in saying the opposing quarterbacks would not have time to throw the ball down-field. Yes the secondary has had its trouble, but the opposing quarterbacks have had all day to throw. I asked Nevada Union coach Dave Humphers how do you defend a 6'3" wide-receiver and he said you get the quarterback.

The Miners lead the Sierra Foothill League in tackles this season which means the defense is spending a lot of time on the field.

This Miner team is one to look out for as they are still in the hunt for the playoffs. If they can win all their games from this point forward they would finish 9-3 which would give them the opportunity to play well into November.
