NOGO WILL GO

It is not often that I write about an out of area player, but when I saw Stephen Nogosek of Woodcreek play baseball I felt compelled to share. The junior pitcher, hitter, base-stealer and out-fielder has the the body type and athleticism to land himself a division I scholarship or even be a low round draft pick come next June.

Nogosek is a 6-foot-2, 185-pound young man who led his team to Sac-Joaquin D II section championship over Granite Bay as well as a 25-7 record.

The Sac Bee reported, Nogosek is fielding more scholarship interest in baseball than football. He burst onto the regional scene last season (as a sophomore) with his 16-strikeout gem to beat Casa Roble 2-0 in a playoff opener. He struck out 10 to beat Bella Vista 4-0 in this postseason despite suffering from a flu bug that he said had him seeing three catchers on every pitch.

This season he hit .374 with 46 hits and 26 RBIs, which are great numbers. It is on the mound where I am most impressed. He pitched 75 innings this season with an ERA of 1.02 and tallied 100 strike-outs with only 40 walks, 41 hits and only 11 earned runs.

If there is one thing I could give Nogosek a slight downgrade is his power hitting as he hit only one home run on the season, but his speed makes up for the lack of power. Of his 46 hits this spring, twelve were for extra bases and he was seven for seven on stolen bases. Nogosek went to the plate 107 times and struck out only seven times. "Nogo" as he is called by teammates really can go!
