MINER BASKETBALL RESULTS - EL DORADO 2012/13

The Miners and Lady Miners' varsity basketball teams tipped off their 2012-2013 season on Monday at Ali Gymnasium in their Foundation game while hosting the Cougars of El Dorado High School. If tonight's Lady Miner game was any indication of how their season will be played you had better look out. As for the boys team we hope their foundation will hold up under the pressure of the storm.

Nevada Union a Division I school hosted El Dorado a Division III school and the Lady Miners drilled them to a 80-22 final. NU coach John McDaniel had his team start the game defending in the full court which delivered many turnovers resulting in many NU layups. The Lady Miners were far to athletic for the visiting team. The only negative was the NU girls committed 17 team fouls in the first half as they played a very aggressive on ball and half court man to man trap. If they find themselves against a better opponent in the future and they foul like that, the outcome could be very different.

This is a team to watch so mark your calendars!

The boys team was without its leading scorer for the night as Ian Davis sat on the bench in street cloths which gave additional opportunities to other Miner players. The team's guard play is a strength but they will need to find away to score from inside the paint or they will have a tough go during the regular season as they play in the Sierra Foothill League which historically is one of the best in the state.

The Miners did win the match-up 43-33 but they did have an 18 point lead late in the game which was given away due to not taking care of the basketball.

There were two dunks in the game one by NU's junior center Vojack and the other by the Cougars but the highlight of the game came in the final seconds of the first half as Cole Hannum shot the ball from half court and all it hit was net. Video of the shot is below.

The first quarter score was 10-9 and going in to the half it was 23-18. The Miners played with a lot of energy when they went with a small lineup in the third quarter which resulted in a 42-23 lead to end the third.

At the start of the fourth quarter it looked as if Nevada Union thought the game was over as they began to unravel. They turned the ball over many times against the Cougars full court press which allowed El Dorado to cut the lead to 43-33 as time ran out.

Overall there were some very impressive minutes for the Miners in their first game of the season especially with Davis sidelined for the contest.
