SKUNK SPRAYS DOG - NOW WHAT?

When we got home from dinner on Thursday evening we noticed a mother and four baby skunks in the drain pipe which goes under our driveway. We watched them for a few minutes and went into the house. A few hours later when it was time to go to bed my wife let the dog out which is part of our normal bedtime ritual but as she opened the door to the backyard the dog got five feet outside, there before them was one of the skunks which proceeded to lift its tail and sprayed the dog. We spent the next hour washing the stench off our beloved family member.

We have been down this awful road before so we were familiar with the solution which works. We used 1/2 hydrogen peroxide and 1/2 dish soap. We mixed them together in a bucket followed by liberally applying it to the dogs coat. Let it stand for 15 minutes and rinse. Repeat until odor is gone.

Saline rinse the dogs eyes a few times.

The dog will smell a little for the next few days. UGH! Not the best way to say good night.
