JESUIT SHORTSTOP TAKEN IN THIRD ROUND

The Philadelphia Phillies selected Jesuit High School shortstop Zach Green with their third round pick in the 2012 draft. Green stands 6-foot-3, 195 pounds. It's said he used a wooden bat this season while hitting .417 with 15 RBIs at the plate and in the field he had 62 attempts with only two errors.

Green will now decide if he will forgo his opportunity to play at Oregon State to play with the Phillies.

The Marauders went 20-8 on the season and fell to Vacaville in the first round by a score of 3-2.

Giants Pick Chris Stratton No. 20 in First-Year Player Draft

The San Francisco Giants selected 2012 Golden Spikes semi-finalist right-handed pitcher, Chris Stratton, with the 20th overall pick in the 2012 First-Year Player draft.

The last college pitcher the Giants drafted in the first round was right-hander Tim Lincecum, whom they selected 10th overall from the University of Washington in 2006. Lincecum reached the Major Leagues the following season and captured the National League Cy Young Award in 2008 and 2009.

Stratton, 6-3, 198-pound right-hander from Tupelo, Mississippi is one of 30 semi-finalists for this year's Golden Spikes award, who lead the Southeastern Conference with 11 wins and a 2.21 ERA (25er, 102.0ip), while finishing second with 123 strikeouts. Overall, Stratton went 11-2 with 1 save, while walking 25 batters and holding opponents to a .211 batting average against. The SEC pitcher of the year became Mississippi State's Friday starter after beginning the season from the bullpen. One of Stratton's most impressive performances this season came when he struck out 17 batters on March 16 vs. Louisiana State University, which marked the most strikeouts by any pitcher in one game in the SEC this year.

  Under Major League Baseball's collective bargaining agreement, the Giants have $4,076,400 in their pool for bonuses to pay draftees, of which $1.85 million is recommended for the first pick. But this doesn't guarantee that signings will occur automatically. The Giants and other teams are free to ignore these constraints, but any club exceeding its suggested bonus pool payout will be taxed. The signing deadline is July 13.

TRAVEL BASEBALL RESEMBLES LIFE

While travel baseball can be expensive and  time consuming, it does offer a player many life benefits. 


We could not find a travel team for our son to play for in Nevada County, so he plays for a team in Lincoln. His team is filled with really great players, supportive families and knowledgeable coaches. Many of which come from different ethnic backgrounds, cities, as well as socioeconomic environments. Therefore travel ball could be said to resembles life.


My son is required to work hard to earn a spot on the roster. He is required to learning how to make friends with other players he does not go to school with and is asked to fit in with the team. Again this is life.


Something playing travel ball does not guarantee is a career in the big leagues, nor does it assure the reward of a college scholarship, and not even a spot in a high school dugout for that matter. 

There's no denying that travel ball is the main vehicle to get to the college level. Weekend travel tournaments at times do resemble college showcases. However, a player’s participation and a college coach’s appearance doesn't guarantee a scholarship. It does give a player the opportunity to be seen, therefore having a chance if the player has what it takes.

There are two guarantees when your child plays travel ball. The first, you will have very little time on the weekends and holidays as well as you may need to take on a second job to pay for it. In turn, parents often demand a return on this investment, namely, a Division I college scholarship. But there are only so many ways 11.7 full scholarships (the allotment the NCAA gives baseball programs) can be cut up and passed out. That equates to 46 percent scholarship players on a 25-man college roster. 

If the travel baseball experience does not produces an opportunity to play high school, college and/or professional baseball, families should regard the experience as more than just about baseball and not be disappointed if their child doesn't receive a college scholarship. The ability to develop their child as an athlete and especially as a person, should not be minimized.


The travel ball experience can help prepare kids for life's challenges.

While helping a Little League player with hitting a few years ago, I discovered one of the best hitting instruction and analysis videos on youtube. I really enjoy the way the video is in slow motion along with a commentator that talks about how the body moves. I hope you enjoy the video as much as I do.

BEAR RIVER OR IS IT THE YUBA IT MIGHT BE THE FEATHER

When the Yuba, Feather and/or Bear River's water level begins to drop, so will you. As the sun warms the days you will want to fish along the bottom to be successful. 

Something happens to a fish when the river level drops to it's summer flows. The fish feel vulnerable.  So when you are out this summer, think deep and keep an eye out for one of those blue holes in the middle of the river as we did while fishing the XXXXXXX  in early June of 2012. We caught a total of seven rainbows the largest was 17 inches on this very special day.
