JUNIOR BRUINS FOOTBALL SWEEPS MINERS - PLAYOFF BOUND

The Bear River Junior Bruins football teams traveled to Hooper Stadium on the campus of Nevada Union High School on Saturday and went home very happy. Each team that took to the field got to put a notch in the win column. 

The final game of the day pitted both NU and BR's top two teams. Both had only fallen once on the season. There was more at stake in the contest than just Nevada County bragging rights. The winner of the game would receive the #1 seed as the football season moves into the post season.

Bear River used a running attach that included Zac Ruby and Austin Baze which gave the Bruins a 16-0 halftime lead. The Miners made a few halftime adjustments and score to open the second half which moved the score to 16-8. From that point forward the Bruins dominated NU on both sides for the ball as they continued to run the ball as well as the score on way to 30-14 victory.

Bear River Midgets are the #1 seed.

The Junior Midget game was not as heated as the Jr. Miners have struggled all season. Bear River's defense stifled NU's offense all afternoon while their balanced offensive scheme kept the Miners on their heals as well as the Bruins in the end zone on way to a 28-0 victory.

Daniel Tantem and Calder Kunde scored on running plays while Logan Jenkins and Clayton Anderson caught touchdown passes in the win.

With Saturday's win the Jr. Midgets have earned the #3 seed.


The Junior Peewees won there contest at Nevada Union on Saturday and they will be the #5 seed this coming Saturday.

SCHOOLS GET ASPHALT - PRUSD

While students, teachers and administration are all on fall break this week the only thing moving around the South county campus of Magnolia Intermediate and Cottage Hill schools is a steamroller.

Kingston Lane (a private road) is in need of repair do to school traffic. When school activities resume it should be smooth driving.

The Robinson Enterprises will soon launch the Nevada City Bistro, at the now closed location of Cool Runnings, the short lived Jamaican restaurant located at 104 Union Street in Nevada City.

KOKANEE SALMON ARE IN THE RIVER - NEVADA COUNTY

On Sunday my son and I went fly fishing in a local river before the Detroit Tigers (my team) vs the Boston Red Sox (son's team) game and if the fish caught count is an indication of game two's outcome then the Tigers will win by a score of 2 to 1!

The Kokanee are in the river and they were fun to catch. This was the first Koke my son has ever landed. It was a great day in the sunshine. Thank you to Tom Page of Reel Anglers Fly Shop in Grass Valley as your advise was spot on.

Kokanee is a word from the Okanagan language referring to land-locked lake populations of Sockeye salmon.

MAGNOLIA BASKETBALL WINS NCAL 7TH AND 8TH GRADE TITLES

Thursday night was a big night for Magnolia's Girls basketball program as both the 7th and 8th grade teams won the Nevada County Athletic League's Large school division at Bear River High School.

The 7th grade team won in easy fashion 36-8 over Seven Hills while the 8th grade team defeated Lyman Gilmore 34-32.

LADY RATTLERS ROLL INTO BASKETBALL CHAMPIONSHIP

The Magnolia Lady Rattler's 8th Grade girls basketball team opened the Nevada County Athletic League Tournament with 37-14 blowout victory over the visiting Weimar Warriors. Magnolia's point guard Kayla Toft led all scorers with 10 points. Katelyn Meylor had 9 points and played tenacious defense. Karinne McDonald and Mallory Rath were a dominate force on the glass leading the team in rebounding and each scored in 6 points a piece in the win.

 The Lady Rattlers will face Lyman Gilmore in the Championship game at 7:30 PM at Bear River High School on Thursday, October 10.
