OPTIMIST FOOTBALL GAME - NORTH OVER SOUTH

As you can see from the scoreboard it was quite a shootout. NU's Kyle Cota and Woodcreek's Stephen Nogosek had a great showing at quarterback as did Eddie Vanderdose from Placer who was used on both sides of the ball and he even threw the ball on a role out which resulted in a pass interference call.

This was a great game to watch. Both teams were very skilled with a lot of talent  The differences were minimal but the game was lost by the South team's special teams who did not punt the ball well all game. One punt went for 6 yards while another went for 10 and it was returned for a touchdown.

2012 OPTIMIST NORTH ROSTER

We are less than three hours from the kick-off of the Optimist All-star football game. The field conditions are wet and cold and the radar looks as if that will not improve. Many area senior boys will play their last football game under less than ideal conditions.

YUBA RIVER - BLOWN OUT - CHRISTMAS 2012 STEELHEAD

Totay was scheduled to be a Steelhead fishing day out on the Yuba River. My gear was ready. I was ready. The big winter storm held off and the Mayan's calendar was not correct so it looked like as if everything was going to work out. Well it didn't.

The Yuba river's flow is controlled by the dam at Lake Englebright and with the "Big Strom" coming the  dam was opened by the California Dept. of Water Resources which blew the river out.

The Yuba fishes well when it's flow is below 2,000 cubic feet per second like it was on Dec 17th. Today it is running at 3,000.

At this point I'm not sure what has been more hyped the Big storm or the end of the world. I'm leaning toward the storm as it has been are larger disappointment.

If you plan to travel to fish the Yuba river system, I would suggest contacting Tom Page at Reel Anglers Fly Shop in Grass Valley as he is full of local knowledge and he is not your typical shop owner as he is willing to share information.

LADY MINERS HOST COLFAX - RESULTS

The Lady Miner's deep bench which has little drop-off from the first seat to the last, used a full court 1-3-1 zone press that wore out the Falcons on way to a 61-38 final on Thursday night at Ali Gymnastics.

In a post game interview I was told the three point shot which Colfax made at the buzzer was counted so The actual score should be 61-41.

The game started slow with both teams missing contested shots from the perimeter  The first was led by Emma Peterson of Nevada Union who had 9 of the Lady Miners 11 where Colfax's scored from the post and went 2 of 7 from the foul line. The first quarter score was 11-6.

In second quarter NU got out to a 10 point lead once again led by Peterson. But Colfax worked the ball inside and cut the lead to 6 with two minutes to play in the half. NU got a few quick steals and scored that worked the halftime score to 23~14. 

At the start of the third quarter NU and Colfax traded two 3-point shots each. Then Colfax tried to up tempo the game by tramping the ball in the half-court which resulted in easy looks under the basket for NU as they extended their lead to 44~23 at the close of the quarter.

Nevada Union's floor leader Peterson took a hard shot to the head in the third and did not return to the game. As previously stated they are a deep team and NU's coach kept the press on into the fourth which resulted in a 28 point lead midway through the final quarter. Colfax never gave up fighting the much deeper team to the final horn with the score 61-38.

Nevada Union was just to much for the visiting Lady Falcon who fell 46-28 to the Lady Miners.

KENDAL ARNETT BASKETBALL TOURNAMENT - OUTLOOK

I would like to take a deeper look at the 71st Kendal Arnett basketball tournament which will be held at Placer High School between Christmas and New Years. What I will try and do is pick the winner by using statistics as well as head to head match ups. While statistics can predict the future but you never know so that is why you play the games.

Head to Head

Woodcreek (5 wins, 7 losses) dropped Del Campo 67-65

Placer (7-2) dropped Woodcreek 67-43

Del Campo (8-3) dropped El Camino 63-51

El Camino (7-4) dropped Bear River 61-54


Bear River (8-1) dropped San Juan (6-4) 51-47

San Juan plays Colfax (8-2) on 12/21 this could be a big indicator as to their match up if it were to happen.

So Placer should beat Del Campo, Woodcreek, El Camino and Bear River if they happen to play each other.

Union Mine (4-4) plays at the Division IV Challenge this weekend as does Bear River. Once we see how these two team fair then there will be a lot more clarity.

The toughest match up to call was a semi-final game where I have Colfax over Bear River. This could be seen as the championship game. The player match up to watch here is Colfax's Will Buell (6-foot-7) vs. Justin Beskeen (6-foot-6). Both players are skilled and the one who has a better game could result in their team playing Placer in the final. The reason I went with Colfax is they have eight players who are 6-3 or bigger where the Bruins only have two. But they say speed kills!

Placer is a team built around speed and defense where Colfax is built around a post game which both Placer and Bear River do not match up well, therefore the winner of the 2012 Kendal Arnett Basketball Tournament will be Colfax.

Remember my conclusion is based on pure speculation derived from statistics as well as head to head match ups, barring any injuries.

ALTA SIERRA ALERT - BREAK-INS

I received the following message from the Alta Sierra Property Owners Association. When we are away the thieves will play.

BE ON THE LOOK OUT!!!!!    ADVISE YOUR NEIGHBORHOOD NOW !!!!!!!

 

Look for a red hatchback containing two males approximately 25 yrs. old who are burglarizing homes in Alta Sierra.

 

They have burglarized a home on Myrna and yesterday (12/19/12) a home on Reagan Way at 11 am.  There may be others that I'm not aware of.

 

They knock on doors to see if anyone is home and break in if no answer. 

 

This time of year we are most vulnerable as we are shopping and attending party's.  Let your neighbor know when you are gone.

 

REPORT ANYTHING SUSPICIOUS TO THE SHERIFFS' DEPARTMENT IMMEDIATELY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
