It was the Fighting Zebra's homecoming game on Friday night, which ended in a dramatic fashion. Be sure to watch the end of the video. I have seen many football games but this final play takes the cake. Oakmont defeated Lincoln by 1.

Butch:  The dog who wouldn't die

When a group of campers arrived at Sugar Pine Reservoir, outside of Foresthill, CA on Friday,

September 14th  they never guessed that the gunshots they heard upon arriving would link
them to  dog named Butch, who had been tied to a tree, beaten, shot in the face, then left to
die.

The Bay Area campers thought they were hearing target practice. Shortly after that, they began
hearing a dog barking and crying.  Thinking it was just another camper’s dog, they ignored the
cries.  For 2 days they could hear the forlorn cries of the animal.

Upon packing up to leave on Sunday, one of the campers named Jaycene resolved to not leave
until the animal was located. She called out for him, and finally the dog answered her calls.
What she found shocked her and immediately brought her to tears.

In the brush was a medium sized fluffy brown dog.    It was clear he had sustained serious
injuries, blood was plastered all over his face, and he was unable to walk.  He had been tied to
the tree since she had arrived Friday.

  Jaycene loaded the dog into her car and drove him to her friend Catherine in Pinole, 140 miles away, who then rushed him to the Pinole Vet Clinic.  Once there the vet confirmed the worst. In addition to what must have been a terrible beating, Butch had been shot in the face multiple times with a pellet gun.

His jaw was broken, and parts of the bone are missing, and his toes on one foot were broken.  He had a raging infection in his mouth from the days spent in the woods without treatment.  Whoever did this to the dog must have thought he had succeeded in killing him, but Butch had another plan, SURVIVE.

Butch, renamed Frankie, is now staying with Catherine, and when the infection clears he will go
to UC Davis Vet Facility for specialized and very expensive reconstructive surgery for his jaw.

Hopefully all will go well, and the dog will have his health restored and become adoptable.  It is
uncertain if his spirit will be restored, as Catherine reports that Butch cringes whenever she
enters the room holding anything in her arm.  His scars are both physical and mental for the
time being.

Scooters Pals, a Nevada County “last chance” rescue at one time adopted Butch out, a dog they
remember as middle aged, a sweet calm dog with waning eyesight. They micro chipped him at
that time.  They were contacted when the vet scanned the dog for a chip. Susan Wallace,
founder of the rescue called this “every rescuers worst nightmare, to have a dog we rehomed
suffer in this way.”  While the details of what exactly happened are unknown, Ms. Wallace is
hoping that the person who did this to Butch will be found and prosecuted.  The task at hand is
finding a way to pay for the surgery.

BEAR RIVER HIGH SCHOOL FOOTBALL - COLFAX PREVIEW

Bear River High School's football team stands with a 5-0 start to the 2012 season but the real test will come Friday night as they cross over the Dog Bar bridge and travel into a hostile environment at Colfax.

The Bruins have posted 164 points while giving up only 94 where the Falcons (3-2) have scored 145 while allowing 63.

Bear River is a run first team as they have carried the ball 231 times to 69 passing. The leading rusher for the Bruins has been Michael Raigoza with 50 touches for 302 yards but there are three other running backs who have 37 or more rushes.

The passing game is led by senior Dillon Smith who has a quarterback rating of 121, which is very high. He did miss a few quarters this fall due to a separated shoulder to his non-throwing arm. His numbers are 50 attempts with 34 completions for a total of 542 yards with 5 touchdowns and two interceptions.

Defending is what this team does well. They have 10 interceptions and 6 fumble recoveries. Jake Savoie leads the team in take a ways with 4 fumbles recovered.

Bear River will need to play the pass this Friday night as the Falcons like to spread their opponent out and pass the ball.

The preseason is over and it is now time to play some games which have playoff implications. The Bruins have historically struggled with the Falcons.

MOUNTAIN LION REPORTED NEAR ALTA SIERRA SCHOOL

Both theUnion.com and KNCO have reported a mountain lion has been spotted near Alta Sierra School.

Alta Sierra resident Roger Bond spotted a mountain lion in the early morning hours Friday in his backyard, located about a quarter-mile from Alta Sierra Elementary School. “It was about 4:30 a.m. when I heard this noise outside my kitchen,” Bond said. “I turned my outdoor lights on, and I saw a big cat just across Wolf Creek with what looked like two cubs.” The mountain lion had recently killed a doe, dragged it across the creek and was busy eating it with her offspring, Bond said. KNCO REPORTED-

An early morning sighting of an adult mountain lion and two cubs in Alta Sierra Friday near an elementary school has teachers on a heightened level of awareness. The cat spotted by resident Roger Bond was seen in his backyard around 4:30 AM. Bond noted that the mountain lion had apparently killed a doe and drug it across Wolf Creek where it was feeding with the young cats when he spotted them. Teachers at Alta Sierra Elementary School are taking extra precautions along with help from concerned parents.
Mountain lion attacks in California are rare with only 15 verified since 1890- most of them occurring since 1990. Six of those attacks resulted in a fatality.

THE UNION'S SOFTBALL TEAM - CHAMPIONS

The Union made its way through the Grass Valley Men's C Division softball playoff without dropping a game, earning the boys the title of champion.

The local newspaper's team is a custom to covering Nevada County happenings but this time they made the news as the defeated the top seeded Hills Flat team 15-11 in seven innings of play on Monday night under the lights of Litton Field.

During the regular season they played in the C-2 division and they did not drop a game where Hills Flat finished atop of the C-1 division. The Union did play Hills Flat two times in the post season tournament, dropping them both times.

I have not played in a championship game in more than a few decades and at my age who knows if I will have this opportunity again so this night will be a fond memory for many years to come. Thank you to the guys who gave me the opportunity to play and relive my childhood for possibly the last time. As we stood together at home plate for our championship team photo with our finger in the air, my hamstrings were definitely tightening but I felt nothing but glee.

Thank you guys, I hope we can play in the dirt together in the near future regardless of the games outcome. We worked together towards a common goal and we achieved success. That was great team work.
