YUBA RIVER AT PARKS BAR SALMON

Tom Page owner of Reel Anglers Fly Shop is reporting the following message....

The Lower Yuba has been holding just above 1000 CFS for the past 15 hours now. If it continues to stay at this level for a few more days it is game on. PMD's have been seen in the drift and caddis are starting to hatch a little more. Water temps are reaching about 53 degree's, and the Salmon are starting the migration with the full moon.

Salmon Redd by Flyfishingtraditions.com

The video below was shot while I was  fishing for steelhead on the Yuba River below the Parks Bar Bridge in October of 2011. This area is a barb-less artificial only river and NO BAIT! It is heavily patrolled by the Department of Fish and Game so don't think about trying something that could be surely memorable.

The video shows me fighting a 35 inch salmon  on 4-pound line for over 2 hours. I was pulled down stream 3/4 of a mile and had to cross the river with water levels above my chest.

In this stretch you will have the opportunity to see salmon on their beds, please do not fish for them and don't walk through them. If you see what looks like an orange rock in the water, that is a marker which indicates the location of a spawning bed of a salmon. Stay away from this spot. The salmon season on the Yuba is closed until further notice so if you do catch one as I did (unintentionally) please release it so it may keep the cycle going.

NEVADA COUNTY ITALIAN FESTIVAL AND BOCCE BALL TOURNAMENT

This years event is being held on September 15 and 16 at Western Gateway park in Penn Valley. The annual event honors the legacy of Italian immigrants and their descendents: To create, promote and sustain a - Cultural Center in Western Nevada County - an awareness and curiosity about the language, history, religion, politics, economy, family, cuisine, literature, art, architecture, music, cinema, education and etc. All who are fascinated and attracted by the Italian heritage may learn, acquire and appreciate Italy's unique role and contribution over the past three millennia to us and the entire globe.

Western Gateway Park Bocce Ball Courts
YES! The Bocce courts are ready. The six new courts are to the left of the main parking lot on the circle and to the right of Buttermaker's Cottage. Bocce can be played competitively on these courts, or just for fun. The bocce ball courts in the park were built by the Nevada County Italian Festival Committee with help from the community.  32 teams competed in the bocce ball tournament on the courts during the 2011 Nevada County Italian Festival in September. So bring your bocce ball set and have some fun.

Bocce is the Italian plural of boccia, meaning a ball. A ball sport, closely related to bowls and pétanque, bocce descended from similar games played throughout the Middle East and Asia. Dating from as early as 5200 BC, an Egyptian tomb painting appears to show two boys playing a game similar to bocce. Around 600 BC, bocce arrived in Greece. The first accounts of bocce in Italy tell about Roman soldiers playing the game during the Punic Wars in about 264 BC. As the Roman Empire grew, bocce spread along with it.
Bocce was played by the nobility and the peasants both, a classless sport. During the Middle Ages, it was criticized for taking men away from archery practice and other military exercises. Because of this, it was banned in the Holy Roman Empire, France, Spain and England. In 1576, the Republic of Venice declared that players would be punished with fines as well as imprisonment. The Catholic Church condemned bocce as a form of gambling, discouraging playing by laymen and prohibiting clergy from participating.
The game was popular with the nobles of Great Britain. Queen Elizabeth I and Sir Francis Drake were great bocce fans. Legend says that Sir Francis Drake and Sir John Hawkins were playing bocce when news came of the impending arrival of the Spanish Armada. Sir Frances Drake reputably refused to set out to defend England until he had finished the game, proclaiming, "First we finish the game; then we’ll deal with the Invincible Armada!"

In the nineteenth century, General Giuseppe Garibaldi, a key figure in the unification of Italy, popularized the sport and developed it in its present form. Bocce is currently played in many European countries and also in areas that have received Italian migrants, including Australia, North America, and South America. The sport has become very popular in the United States where, on a typical day, you can see people of various ethnic backgrounds enjoying themselves with a game or two.

PLACER FOOTBALL WEEK ONE 2012

Placer defeated a solid Central Catholic team in it's opening season game on Friday night in Auburn with a 48-30 win. The Hillman were up 24-0 in the second quarter so that shows they came ready to play but what happened from that point forward should be addressed.

The Auburn Journal reports -  The Raiders (1-1) put together scoring drives of 80, 73 and 70 yards, including touchdown runs of 74 and 40 yards by running back Ray Lomas IV (203 yards, 22 carries).

Followed by this quote from the Placer coach....
"We just have to work on staying focused for 48 minutes," said Placer coach Joey Montoya, who was pleased in general to open the season with a victory. "The momentum was in our favor, but we lost a little bit of focus. You got to give them (Central Catholic) credit, they fought for 48 minutes."

The Hillman (1-0) did win the game but I do agree with coach Montoya about the 48 minutes. Placer has a great running game that surely works in practice against the first team defense, so there must be concern as to how the home team let their opponent run down their throat late in the game to cut the score to 31-23?

If Placer plans to be crowned champion of the PVL in 2012, they will need to keep their intensity from the first play to the last. Coasting to the finish-line will get you past by a lesser team almost every time.

A win is a win!

This coming Friday Placer travels to Oak Ridge where they will take on Foothill of Palo Cedro, CA.

My son showed this to me. Get ready as it comes from nowhere.

NEVADA UNION FOOTBALL GRANT - FULL GAME VIDEO 2012

Nevada Union's football team traveled to Grant High School on August 31, 2012 for the first time in eight seasons and it was also the first time the two teams had met since 2005. If you are more of a Miner than a Pacer then you will want to watch this contest.

There was Miner Magic all over the field on this night as Dave Humphers' team ripped Mike Alberghini's team apart resulting in a 37-7 win. It looked and sounded as if fans from both sides of the field (one side was positive and the other was down right negative and vulgar) were a little shocked at how poorly the Pacers played. Grant's running game was strong at times but their passing game never came together.

While Grant has better overall speed than the Miners, it did not show as the defense was disciplined and held containment. Coach Humphers used Grants speed against them by running his Wing-T to perfection, it looked as if the Pacers often over pressured the first or second option therefore leaving a later option in a one on one situation which played into NU's power running game.

The Miners played a near perfect game, the mistakes they did make were a few delay of game penalties inside the 10 yard line and their field goal kicker did miss and extra point.

Next week the Miners will take on Pleasant Grove (1-1) at Sheldon.

NEVADA UNION BASKETBALL - JOHN SHEETS COACHING U OF MAINE

It is being reported by the University of Maine's basketball program that former Nevada Union basketball player and quarterback of the Miner's football team Jon Sheets has taken the assistant coaching job at University of Maine. "Jon will be a wonderful addition to our staff and I am thrilled he decided to join us," said Woodward. "Jon was a great player and leader in our program, and we always felt he was a coach-on-the-floor who had a great feel for the game and loved hard work.  He is a man of great character, is a tremendous teacher, and will do a great job leading the young men in our program to great success both on and off the court. We are excited to have him join our coaching staff!
Sheets came back to Maine after serving as an assistant coach for the women's basketball team at Simpson University in California.
