NEVADA UNION BASKETBALL TRYOUTS

Nevada Union High School's boys and girls basketball tryouts begin Monday November 11. 

The Miner's head coach Jeff Dellis will look to improve on last season's 9-18 overall record. This will be no easy task as NU lost their top scorer and re-bounder 6-foot-8 Lukas Vojack (15.3 points and 8.8 rebounds per game) who moved out of the area as well as graduating Cody Gardner (10.8 ppg). Dellis will build the 2013-14 team around returning shooting guard Nolan Stefani (5-foot-10) who averaged 8.4 points per game. Anytime you lose your top two players including a post player the following season can be very difficult. The 2012/13 JV team went 12-15 overall with a 1-9 Sierra Foothill League record. 

The boys team will play their first game on Dec. 2 at Eldorado and their first home contest will be Jan. 10 when they tip-off against Woodcreek.

While the boys may continue to struggle this season the girls team looks as if they should continue their winning ways. NU coach John McDaniel led his Lady Miner team to a 21-5 overall record and went 9-1 in the SFL. McDaniel's team did graduate a few very talented players, but they are still very strong. They do return Sydney Porter (13 ppg) who was their leading scorer, 5-foot-11 Sammy DeHart (8 ppg) the team's 3rd leading scorer, Emma Peterson (7.3 ppg) their 4th leading scorer. 

The Lady Miners look as if this will be a reload year. Their first game is scheduled for Nov. 29 at Christian Brothers and their first home game is Dec. 3 versus Vanden.

BEAR RIVER - NEVADA UNION - JUNIOR FOOTBALL PLAYOFFS

As both Nevada Union High School's and Bear River High School's varsity football teams continue to struggle this fall, the future looks bright for the two local schools as three of the Bear River Junior Bruin and two Nevada Union Junior Miner's football teams won their first round playoff games.

2013 SVUSA Playoff Game Schedule 2nd Round Playoff - November 2nd, 2013 

Host: Del Campo Jr. Cougars 

Del Campo High School - From I-80: Take the Madison Avenue exit. Go east to Dewey Drive and turn right (south). School is on your right. 

The Bear River Junior PeeWee team who enters game as the 5 seed will play in the 9 a.m. game. They will take on top seeded Capitol Christian.

The Bear River Junior Midget team will play Del Campo in the 1 p.m. game who enter their second round game as the #3 and #2 seeds respectively.

Nevada Union's Midget team will play in the last game of the day (3 pm) where they will take on Del Campo. The Junior Miner's team enters the game as the #2 seed where the Junior Cougars are the #3.

Host: Lincoln Jr. Zebras 

Lincoln High School - From I-80 west; Go East to Highway 65 exit to Lincoln. Once in Lincoln, turn left (west) on 7th Street. At J Street, turn right (north). 

The Junior Miner's Junior PeeWee team kicks off at 10 am for a contest against Lincoln. The Miners earned the #2 seed while the Zebras are the #3 seed.

Nevada County's top seeded team is the Bear River Midgets who only dropped one game this season. The Bruins will take on Placer at 4 pm. The Bruins are the #1 seed while the Hillman are the #4.

BROWN SOX 12U FALL IN CHAMPIONSHIP

The Brown Sox 12u baseball team took to the field at Redwood Park in Sacramento for a two day tournament on October 26 and 27th. They made it to the championship game with a 4-3 win on Sunday over the River City Outlaws where Bennett King picked up the win while Ryan Bradford got the save. The Sox's bats when quite as they fell in the championship game to Sacramento Baseball Organization under windy and cold conditions. Dustin Thompson scored the Sox only run in the championship game which can on an RBI single by Dean Hopper in the top of the first inning.

On day one of the tournament the Sox dropped the Outlaws 10-2 and Best Speed Baseball by a score of 12-5. Which was good enough for the tournaments #1 seed going into championship Sunday.

Tucker Ramos went 6 for 6 with two doubles and Trevor Nielsen went 4 for 4 while Hopper went 4 for 6 with two doubles and triple and a home run on Saturday.

The Brown Sox carry an overall record of 18-5 for the fall season.

The Sox will host the Lincoln Tribe on Sunday at Western Gateway Park.

ASPOA RECALL GROUP HOLDING BOARD ELECTION

GRASS VALLEY LITTLE LEAGUE IN DRIVERS SEAT - BEAR RIVER WINS - NEVADA CITY SENT PACKING

Aidan Keros led the Grass Valley majors fall ball team on way to defeat Forrest Hill 4-2 on Thursday night at Condon Park. GV will stand on the sideline until Saturday when they will take on the winner of Bear River vs Forresthill game. BR vs FH play on Friday night at Condon Park. Previously in the tournament Forresthill defeated Bear River by a score of 10-8. This is a win or go home game for each team.

At Pioneer Park on Thursday night Bear River fell behind 5-0 against Nevada City in early action but rallied back behind Luke Barrio who finished with 9 strikeouts on way to an win 8-6. With the win Bear River stays alive but Nevada City is sent packing.

Forrest Hill and Bear River will play in the elimination game on Friday night where it is win or go home. The winner will take on the undefeated Grass Valley team Saturday at noon. Grass Valley will only have to win one game while the winner of the Friday night game will have to win two to earn championship honors.

Bear River has won the past two Fall Ball championships.

AUBURN - WALMART AND COSTCO

While we have been hearing for a while now that Costco is slated to open up shop behind the Home Depot in Auburn. I heard today that they have broken ground. Also it is said that Auburn is getting a Walmart which will be going in behind Mel's Diner on on Highway 49. Many people have also stated that Auburn is getting a Trader Joes. These significant events could change Nevada County's spending and travel habits.

We already know these are very popular places to shop for many Nevada County residents. But many times local shoppers don't have time or they may not need a lot of items therefore they don't drive to these larger and many times less expensive down-the-hill Rocklin and Roseville stores. This could and most-likely will change when they are less than 20 minutes away.

The economic impact to Nevada County's already stretched mom-and-pop stores could be significant. The county has added less than 120 new homes (including Cascade Crossing on Combie Rd.) in the past 5 years so it is safe to say, we have not added many more residents. So in order for the these new  to our area, big box stores to be successful they will look to draw from the current population base along the Highway 49 corridor. Which may leave many Grass Valley and Nevada City merchants vulnerable.

LITTLE LEAGUE FALL BASEBALL TOURNAMENT RESULTS - GVLL, FHLL, BRLL, NCLL

In the first round of the Major's Division Fall Ball tournament it was Grass Valley Little League who advanced in a 3-2 pitchers duel over Nevada City Little League while Forrest Hill dropped Bear River in a 10-8 slug-fest.

Gabe Baker picked up the win in the game which was played at Condon Park on Tuesday. Grass Valley's manager utilized each of his pitchers for 35 pitches apiece which means he will be able to pitch anyone on his staff in the second round. GVLL's second round game will be played on Thursday at Condon Park with the first pitch at 5:30 when they will take on Forresthill.

Forresthill delivered with their bats as they out hit Bear River 13 to 4. Ty Knox pitched for Bear River and came out of the game when he hit his pitch limit going 4 2/3 innings with the score 8-6. Caleb Hurst closed the game. Hurst struck out 3. Hurst is available to throw on Thursday when they will take on Nevada City Little League at 5:30 at Pioneer Park as he pitched less than 35.
